Provided below is a list of KPBSD essential and other recommended learning apps for elementary students categorized by subject.  To add a free app to your iTunes library, simply click the app icon while iTunes is running.

Essential Learning Apps

Reading

iBooks (iPod/iPad) FREE – iBooks is an amazing way to download and read books. iBooks includes the iBookstore, where you can download the latest bestselling books or your favorite classics – day or night. Browse your library on a beautiful bookshelf, tap a book to open it, flip through pages with a swipe or a tap, and bookmark or add notes to your favorite passages.
VoiceMemos (iPod) INCLUDED – Record voice for fluency practice, and assessment. Sync with iTunes to create play lists called voice memos. Here you can create digital portfolios for each student. VoiceMemo (Alternative to Voice Memos) (iPod/iPad) $0.99 – Unlike the iPod, the iPad does not include the VoiceMemos utility.  VoiceMemo is a third party alternative for iPod/iPad that has the same functionality as the VoiceMemos utility that is included on iPods by default.
Lit2Go (iPod/iPad) FREE – a free online collection of stories and poems in Mp3 (audiobook) format. You can download collections directly into an iTunes library; view the text to read along as you listen; print out stories and poems; browse by author, title, reading level or subject matter; search by title, author or keywords; included are an abstract, citation, playing time, word count and in many cases a reading strategy.

Language Arts

Word Wizard(iPod/iPad) $2.99 – Talking Movable Alphabet, pronounce and spell any word using phonics or letter name, customize pronunciation of any word, includes 1,400 questions and answers, spelling quizzes with 184 built in word lists or create your own, statistics for each list, and reports.

Math

RocketMath (iPod/iPad) $0.99 – Numbers, fractions, decimals, counting, telling time, U.S. Money, shapes (2D & 3D), patterns, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square roots and more. 56 different math missions with floating objects including stars, coins, clocks, 3D shapes, pizzas, etc.  Earn bronze, silver and gold medals.  Difficulty ranges from even/odd numbers to square roots.
iTooch MATH Grade 5 (iPad) $5.99 (FREE lite version available) – iTooch 5th GRADE MATH is, by far, the largest collection of the App Store of educational activities based on US national standards.  iTooch was developed by passionate teachers, educational professionals, and video-game designers, many of whom are parents as well. The collaboration of these specialists has resulted in a wonderful learning tool that motivates children to learn.
Weigh Fun (iPad) $0.99 (FREE lite version available) – Teach children how to use weights and measures in a fun game. This game is aimed at children 6 – 12 years old. WeighFun uses a shopping trip to a farmer’s market as a setting to present the child with a weighing scale and weights with which they have to purchase fruits and vegetables.
Distance Game (iPod/iPad) $0.99 – Do you would know how to draw 1.5 inches? And 17 mm? Dare to test your skills with this funny game. You must draw two lines separated by a distance, and try to make it as accurate as possible. In rounds of 10, 20 or 30, who makes fewer mistakes wins!
